Equipment

  • Ice Cream Maker (Optional, but recommended)
  • Mixing bowl
  • Whisk
  • Zester or Grater
  • Citrus Juicer
  • Airtight Container (for freezing)
  • Spatula

Ingredients

  • 2 cups - Heavy Cream
  • 1 cup - Whole Milk
  • 3/4 cup - Granulated Sugar
  • 1 teaspoon - Vanilla Extract
  • 2 large - Oranges for zest and juice
  • Optional - 1 teaspoon Orange Extract for a more intense orange flavor

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Orange Zest and Juice

  • Zest both oranges, making sure to avoid the white pith.
After zesting, cut the oranges in half and squeeze out their juice until you have about 1 cup of fresh orange juice.
Set both the zest and juice aside.

Step 2: Make the Creamy Ice Cream Base

  • In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the heavy cream, whole milk, and granulated sugar until the sugar is fully dissolved.
Add the vanilla extract and stir in the orange zest and fresh orange juice.
Taste and adjust the sweetness or orange flavor as needed, adding a little more sugar or juice to suit your preference.

Step 3: Churn the Mixture

  • If you’re using an ice cream maker, pour the prepared mixture into the machine and churn according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
This typically takes 20-25 minutes, and the mixture should have a soft-serve consistency when done.

Step 4: Freeze and Firm Up

  • Once the ice cream has reached soft-serve consistency, transfer it to an airtight container and smooth the top.
Freeze for at least 3 hours or overnight to allow it to firm up to the ideal scoopable texture.

Step 5: Serve and Enjoy

  • Once the ice cream is ready, allow it to sit at room temperature for a few minutes to soften slightly for easier scooping.
Serve in bowls, cones, or as an ice cream sandwich. Enjoy your homemade Orange Creamsicle ice cream!

Notes

  • Fresh Oranges: The fresh zest and juice from the oranges will give the best flavor. Don’t substitute with orange juice concentrate for the full, fresh taste.
  • Ice Cream Texture: For a smoother texture, make sure to chill your base in the fridge for 1-2 hours before churning.
  • Non-Dairy Option: For a dairy-free version, swap the heavy cream and whole milk for coconut cream or cashew cream, and use a non-dairy milk like almond or oat milk.
  • Storage: Store the ice cream in an airtight container in the freezer for up to 1-2 weeks. Make sure to cover the surface with plastic wrap to avoid ice crystals forming.
  • Add-Ins: Feel free to add mix-ins like mini chocolate chips or crushed waffle cones in the last few minutes of churning for extra flavor and texture.
