Main Ingredients
- 1 tbsp olive oil
- 1 medium yellow onion finely chopped
- 4 cloves garlic minced
- 1 lb ground beef or ground turkey for a lighter version
- 2 tbsp tomato paste
- 1 can 28 oz crushed tomatoes
- 1 can 15 oz tomato sauce
Seasonings & Herbs
- 1 tsp dried oregano
- 1 tsp dried basil
- 1 tsp Italian seasoning
- 1 tsp salt adjust to taste
- ½ tsp black pepper
- ½ tsp red pepper flakes optional, for spice
Optional Additions
- ½ cup red wine or beef broth for depth of flavor
- ¼ cup grated Parmesan cheese for extra richness
- Fresh basil or parsley for garnish
Step 1: Sauté the Aromatics
Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
Add chopped onions and sauté for 3-4 minutes, until soft.
Stir in minced garlic and cook for 1 more minute until fragrant.
Step 2: Brown the Meat
Add ground beef, breaking it up with a spoon. Cook for 5-7 minutes until browned.
Drain excess grease if necessary.
Step 3: Add Tomato Ingredients
Stir in tomato paste and mix well.
Pour in crushed tomatoes and tomato sauce, stirring to combine.
If using, add red wine or beef broth for a richer taste.
Step 4: Season & Simmer
Sprinkle in oregano, basil, Italian seasoning, salt, black pepper, and red pepper flakes.
Lower the heat and let the sauce simmer for 20-30 minutes, stirring occasionally.
Step 5: Taste & Serve
Adjust seasoning if needed. If using, stir in Parmesan cheese for extra flavor.
