Equipment

  • 1 large mixing bowl
  • (1) Whisk
  • 1 Griddle or Skillet
  • 1 spatula
  • 1 Large Knife (for slicing bread)
  • 1 measuring cup
  • 1 measuring spoon

Ingredients

  • 4 slices Texas toast or brioche/challah, 1-1.5 inches thick
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup milk or heavy cream
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 2 tbsp butter for cooking
  • Powdered sugar for topping (optional)
  • Maple syrup for serving (or other syrup varieties)
  • Fresh fruit or whipped cream optional for garnish

Instructions

Prepare the Custard Mixture:

  • In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk (or heavy cream), cinnamon, and vanilla extract until smooth and fully combined.

Slice the Bread:

  • Cut the Texas toast (or brioche/challah) into 1-1.5 inch slices.
The bread should be thick enough to soak up the custard but sturdy enough to hold its shape while cooking.

Soak the Bread:

  • Dip each slice of bread into the custard mixture, ensuring both sides are well-coated.
Let each slice soak for about 10-15 seconds per side—do not over-soak.

Cook the French Toast:

  • Heat a griddle or skillet over medium heat.
Add about 1 tablespoon of butter to the pan.
Once the butter is melted and sizzling, place the soaked bread slices onto the skillet.
Cook for about 2-3 minutes per side until golden brown and crispy.
Be sure to flip the bread carefully to maintain its shape.

Serve:

  • Remove the French toast from the skillet and place it on a serving plate.
Dust with powdered sugar, add a dollop of butter, and drizzle with maple syrup.
Optionally, top with fresh fruit or whipped cream for extra indulgence.

Notes

  • Bread Options: While Texas toast is the classic choice for Cracker Barrel French Toast, feel free to experiment with other breads like brioche, challah, or even sourdough for different textures and flavors.
  • Milk Alternatives: You can substitute regular milk with almond milk, soy milk, or oat milk for a dairy-free version. If using heavy cream, it will make the French toast extra rich and creamy.
  • Toppings: Don’t be afraid to get creative with toppings. Fresh berries, whipped cream, or even a sprinkle of cinnamon can elevate your dish. For a richer experience, try adding a drizzle of chocolate syrup or caramel.
  • Make-Ahead Option: If you want to prepare French toast in advance, cook it and store it in the fridge. Reheat in the oven at 350°F for 10-15 minutes to maintain its crispiness.
