Wooden Spoon or Spatula
Serving bowl
Ingredients
12oz340g Fresh Cranberries
¾cup150g Granulated Sugar (adjust to taste)
½cup120ml Water
½cup120ml Fresh Orange Juice
1tspOrange Zest
½tspGround Cinnamonoptional
2tbspMaple Syrupoptional, for added sweetness
Instructions
Prepare the Ingredients:
Rinse the fresh cranberries and discard any damaged or shriveled ones. Zest the orange and juice it, then set aside.
Combine Ingredients in a Saucepan:
In a medium saucepan, combine the water, orange juice, and granulated sugar. Stir over medium heat until the sugar dissolves completely.
Cook the Cranberries:
Add the cranberries to the saucepan and stir gently. Bring to a simmer, and cook for 10-15 minutes. The cranberries will start to pop as they soften and release their juice. Stir occasionally.
Add Flavor Enhancements:
Once the cranberries burst and the mixture thickens, add the orange zest and cinnamon. Stir to combine. If desired, add maple syrup for extra sweetness.
Let It Cool:
Remove the saucepan from heat and let the cranberry sauce cool for 5-10 minutes. The sauce will continue to thicken as it cools.
Serve or Store:
Transfer the cranberry sauce to a serving bowl and allow it to cool completely. Refrigerate for at least an hour before serving to allow the flavors to meld.
Notes
Consistency: If you prefer a smoother cranberry sauce, use a potato masher to break up the cranberries or blend it gently with an immersion blender after it cools slightly.
Sweetness Level: Adjust the sugar or syrup based on your taste preference. If you like your sauce more tart, reduce the sugar.
Make Ahead: This sauce can be made up to 3-4 days in advance. Store it in an airtight container in the fridge and stir before serving.
Storage: Leftovers can be stored in the fridge for up to 1 week. It also freezes well for up to 3 months—just thaw overnight in the fridge before using.
Variations: Experiment with adding chopped apples, pears, or even a splash of bourbon for unique flavor twists.
