Equipment

  • 1 large mixing bowl
  • 1 Pastry Cutter or Fork (for cutting butter into flour)
  • 1 measuring cup set
  • 1 Biscuit Cutter (or a round glass)
  • (1) Baking sheet
  • 1 Pastry Brush (for brushing butter)
  • 1 Wire Rack (for cooling)

Ingredients

Dry Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt

Wet Ingredients

  • 6 tablespoons cold unsalted butter cubed
  • ¾ cup buttermilk

For Brushing on Top

  • 2 tablespoons melted butter

Instructions

Step 1: Preheat & Prepare

  • Preheat the oven to 450°F (232°C).
  • Lightly grease a baking sheet or line it with parchment paper.

Step 2: Mix the Dry Ingredients

  • In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt until evenly combined.

Step 3: Cut in the Butter

  • Add the cold, cubed butter to the flour mixture.
  • Use a pastry cutter or fork to cut the butter into the flour until the mixture looks like coarse crumbs.

Step 4: Add Buttermilk

  • Slowly pour in the buttermilk and mix gently until a dough forms.
  • Be careful not to overmix—this keeps the biscuits light and fluffy.

Step 5: Shape and Cut the Biscuits

  • Transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface and pat it into a ¾-inch thick rectangle.
  • Fold the dough over itself 2-3 times to create layers, then roll it out again.
  • Use a biscuit cutter or a floured glass to cut out biscuits. Press straight down—do not twist.

Step 6: Bake the Biscuits

  • Arrange the biscuits on the baking sheet so they are slightly touching.
  • Bake for 10-12 minutes, or until golden brown on top.

Step 7: Brush with Butter & Serve

  • Remove from the oven and immediately brush the tops with melted butter.
  • Let them cool slightly on a wire rack before serving.

Notes

  • No Buttermilk? Substitute by mixing ¾ cup milk + 1 tablespoon vinegar or lemon juice. Let it sit for 5 minutes before using.
  • For Extra Flaky Biscuits: Keep all ingredients cold and avoid overmixing the dough.
  • Storage Tips: Store biscuits in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days or refrigerate for up to 1 week.
  • Freezing Instructions: Freeze unbaked biscuits for up to 3 months. Bake straight from frozen, adding 1-2 minutes to the baking time.
  • Serving Ideas: Pair with gravy, honey, jam, or butter for a classic Southern treat.
