Equipment

  • 1 Large baking dish (9x13 inches)
  • 1 mixing bowl
  • (1) Whisk
  • 1 Measuring cups and spoons
  • 1 Sharp knife (for cutting bread)
  • 1 oven
  • 1 Spoon or spatula (for pressing down on bread)

Ingredients

  • 8 slices Texas toast or thick-cut bread
  • 4 large Eggs
  • 1 cup Whole milk
  • 1/2 cup Heavy cream
  • 1/4 cup Brown sugar packed
  • 1 tsp Ground cinnamon
  • 1 tsp Vanilla extract
  • 1/4 tsp Salt optional, enhances flavor
  • 1 tbsp Butter optional, for greasing baking dish
  • Toppings optional:
  • Maple syrup
  • Powdered sugar
  • Fresh berries
  • Whipped cream

Instructions

Prepare the Bread:

  • Cut the bread into 1-inch thick slices. Arrange the bread slices in a large greased baking dish, fitting them snugly together.

Make the Custard:

  • In a mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, cream, brown sugar, cinnamon, vanilla extract, and salt until fully combined.

Soak the Bread:

  • Pour the custard mixture evenly over the bread, pressing down gently with a spoon or spatula to ensure the bread absorbs the mixture.
Let it rest for 10 minutes, or refrigerate for 30 minutes or overnight for best results.

Bake the French Toast:

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Remove the dish from the fridge (if chilled), and bake for 35-45 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and crispy.

Serve:

  • Once baked, allow the French toast to cool for a few minutes before serving.
Top with maple syrup, fresh berries, whipped cream, and a dusting of powdered sugar for the ultimate indulgence.

Notes

  • Bread Selection: Choose thick, sturdy bread like Texas toast, challah, or brioche for the best texture. Avoid soft sandwich bread, which may get too soggy.
  • Make Ahead: To save time in the morning, assemble the dish the night before and refrigerate overnight. This allows the bread to fully soak up the custard.
  • Customize the Custard: Feel free to add a pinch of nutmeg, a splash of orange zest, or even some maple syrup to the custard mixture for extra flavor.
  • Toppings: You can also add a sprinkle of toasted nuts or a drizzle of caramel for a creative twist on this classic dish.
