Equipment

  • 1 Baking dish (9x9 inch or similar)
  • 1 Small knife or apple corer
  • 1 Medium Mixing Bowl
  • 1 Spoon or small scoop
  • 1 Basting brush (optional)
  • 1 Measuring spoons
  • 1 oven

Ingredients

  • 6 medium apples Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, or Gala
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar packed
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg optional
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter cut into small pieces
  • 1/4 cup raisins optional
  • 1/4 cup chopped pecans or walnuts optional
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract optional

Instructions

Preheat the Oven:

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).

Prepare the Apples:

  • Wash and dry the apples. Core the apples, leaving the bottom intact.
You can use an apple corer or a small paring knife to carefully remove the core.
Optionally, score the skin around the top of each apple to help them cook evenly.

Make the Filling:

  • In a small mixing bowl, combine the brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg (if using), and salt.
Add the raisins and nuts, if desired, and mix them all together.

Stuff the Apples:

  • Stuff the apples with the cinnamon-sugar mixture, pressing gently to pack the filling inside each core.
Place the stuffed apples in a baking dish.

Add Butter and Lemon Juice:

  • Place a small piece of butter on top of each apple.
Drizzle lemon juice over the apples to enhance flavor and prevent browning.

Bake the Apples:

  • Pour about 1/4 cup of water into the bottom of the baking dish.
This will help steam the apples and create a syrupy glaze.
Place the dish in the oven and bake for 40–45 minutes, or until the apples are tender but still holding their shape.

Serve:

  • Once baked, remove the apples from the oven and let them cool for a few minutes before serving.
Serve warm with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream for an extra indulgent treat.

Notes

  • Apple Selection: Granny Smith apples are ideal for a tart balance with the sweetness of the sugar and cinnamon. However, you can also use Honeycrisp or Gala for a sweeter, more tender apple.
  • Add-ins: For a more decadent dessert, consider adding raisins, nuts (pecans or walnuts), or even a drizzle of caramel sauce after baking.
  • Make Ahead: You can prep the apples up to 1 day in advance. Just store them in the fridge, covered, and bake them when you’re ready.
  • Storage: Leftover baked apples can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3–4 days. Reheat in the microwave or oven before serving.
  • Dairy-Free Option: Swap the butter for coconut oil or a dairy-free butter alternative if you prefer a dairy-free version.
